From a Young Traveler to Another

You might heard a lot about how people need to travel before turning 35, read about how important it is to travel, and the suggestion about visiting one new place every year, etc.

The question is how?

As Asian, I grew up with saving tradition. A philosophy on how I have to save while young, for then I can live wealthy after retire. So, going for holiday on young age sounds like wasting whole life saving to us.

Second, not all of us are lucky enough to afford one long holiday per year.

Here are some of my personal tips on how to travel at young age, without spending your parent’s fortune:

1. Subscribe for a scholarship.
Believe it or not, this could be your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have one full year of holiday. When you enter working life, the longest holiday you could have is 30 days. Besides, this is also a good booster for your future education 😉

2. Join a foreign language course.
Here is the place where you can find lots of information about student exchange or a good deal of summer course program abroad. Institut Francaise or Goethe Institut could be a good start 😉

3. Register as an au pair.
What is that?? Au Pair is a domestic assistant from a foreign country working for, and living as part of, a host family. Typically, au pairs take on a share of the family’s responsibility for childcare as well as some housework, and receive a small monetary allowance for personal use (source : Wikipedia).

Too bad that I don’t really have patience for kids, otherwise I’ll try au pair-ing for a year 😀 The options are countries like Spain, Canada, Germany, UK, Australia, and many more. How tempting it could be? Read more about au pair here : http://www.aupair-world.net

4. Being part of a travel forum.
Forum like Lonely Planet’s Thorn Tree is a good source of information. Other than making new friends around the world, sometimes people are looking for travel partner here. You can save good deal of money by sharing cost, like motorhome rental or petrol.

5. Subscribe yourself in airlines online deal.
I once got a return ticket Surabaya – London for USD 450. Huraa!!!!
But of course, bargain ticket comes with its inflexibility. Normal symptoms are : flying period is more than 6 month from day of issued, baggage are limited, ticket can not be reschedule.

6. Have a travel agent “friend”
They usually have advance info of upcoming promotion and bargain holiday package. Start from TravelPlus – Indonesia! Our online reservation are ready visa YM, BBM, Whatsapp, and email (hello@yourtravelplus.com) 😉 Check our trips at www.yourtravelplus.com
